Examinations for licensure are offered six times each year. The examination is a two days long and is presently offered in three locations within the State of Florida simultaneously.
DBPR developed examinations are primarily provided in English but the Spanish translation is available. This includes the Construction Examination, candidates must select the desired language when completing the exam application with Professional Testing Inc. (PTI) and when scheduling for the Business and Finance exam part with Pearson VUE.

During the August 2010 license renewal, the Electrical Contractors’ Licensing Board will charge a one-time special assessment fee of $75.00 per licensee, which will be due along with your renewal fee. The department is statutorily required to maintain a cash balance for each of the professions it regulates. The ECLB has been operating in a deficit for several years, and the board determined the best way to eliminate the deficit was to assess a one-time $75 fee, rather than permanently increase the total cost of the license. During the 2009 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill 425, which became law on October 1, 2009. Beginning October 1, 2009, House Bill 425 requires all professional licensees to report to the department within 30 days of being convicted or found guilty of, or having plead nolo contendere or guilty to a crime in any jurisdiction. A licensee who fails to report that information may be subject to disciplinary action, including fines, suspension or license revocation. To report this information, complete the criminal self-reporting document and mail to the department as provided on the form.
The Better Business Bureau received more than a quarter of a million requests for reports on general and roofing contractors and construction and remodeling services in 2006, its latest reporting year. It processed just more than 24,000 complaints.
